St. Charles Free Methodist Church

Today

crossWe are an evangelical, welcoming community of believers who meet together to glorify God by worshipping Him, bringing others to Him, discipling them, and loving each other.  We are part of the Free Methodist Church of North America.

Our History past;

oldchurchThe church was founded in 1860, and it’s believed that it was the second Free Methodist Church founded in the world.  The denomination split away from traditional Methodism in the 1860s over crucial issues like slavery, paying for pews, freedom in worship. and entire sanctification.

The St. Charles Church moved into its longtime church building on the southwest corner of Third and Walnut streets in 1881. There it was the site of a diverse congregation—people of many races and age groups have attended it in the past. The church contained an impressive mural by William Luckett, grandson of a freed slave, depicting Jesus, the good shepherd, caring for a flock of sheep. That history of diversity continues today in the many ethnic groups and socioeconomic levels being served by the church.

In 1996, the church had an opportunity to purchase the former Congregational Church building, a historic St. Charles landmark on the northeast corner of Walnut and Third streets. After two years of sharing the building with the congregational church, the Free Methodist Church took full possession of the building in 1998. More than five times the size of its previous church building, the new facility enables the church to carry on a wider range of ministries in service to the community and Jesus Christ.

The church has experienced fuller years and leaner years over its 147-year history, but commitment and service to God and community continue to be its foundation.
